1990 Jeep Cherokee Trany swap

I have a 90 Cherokee with the vaccume transfer case system (no id tag so not sure what is exactly) and ripped out third and forth gear. so i bought an 89 cherokee to switch trannys but niether of them still have the id tag on the tranny and i cant tell if they are the same, they look the same but im not sure if they will bolt up the transfer case beacuse the 89 has a np242 t-case which does not have the vaccume setup is there any way to tell if would work other than just takin out and tryin it...
