1990 Jeep Cherokee Steering play, loosing control

Hello,
my 1990 Jeep has a lot of play in the steering wheel.
I know the toe is off because the steering wheel is not straight when I am driving straight on the road. But it also feels like I could loose control of the vehicle when I hit a bump, the steering just goes all over the place and I have to correct it quickly. Even when I am driving straight and make a lane change it seems like I have to over compensate with the steering wheel to bring the car back to a straight line. Is it the steering? the alignment? or something else? I need to get this repaired but dont want to be fleeced either and would like to know what its possible going to cost me. I cant seem to find an honest mechanic but want this fixed right. Any ideas?

Not positive on the 1990, but there is a superceded steering dampener

Are you saying that these are already on my vehicle and may need to be replaced or is this an after market product that being added might solve the problem?

The Grand cherokee has a big problem with these, although the cherokee does have one. IF you can jack up the front end, you can check it yourself. Both front wheels have to be off the ground. By shaking the wheels, you'll be able to feel for play. (I was assuming everything else was already checked and tight, but I may have been wrong.)

IF everything is tight, then get some good rubber on front and align it. Excessive toe-in problem can cause a pull either way ans it will over compensate. IT becomes magnified with tire wear.
