1990 Jeep Cherokee Clutch problem

Have you checked the transfer case, make sure the four wheel drive is no partially ingaged.

I'm pretty sure, I was wondering if u could give me a list of possibilities? I was gonna take it to a mechanic to see if its possibly the slave cylinder? Thats what I've been told could be a possibility.

Do the gears grind while driving or just when changing gears or starting out?

Also how much play do you have on the clutch pedal? Should have about an Inch before clutch begins to engage.

Its only while driving, I press the clutch, and immediately try to put it in gear but it grinds for a bit. It also does it when I'm at a stoplight but only after about 45 minutes of driving. Usually it takes about 2-3 seconds before it'll engage. But right now during the cold it hasn't been doing it.

Ok, with it not doing in the cold, I would say you have the wrong weight gear oil in it. You should have 75W-90 GL-3 Gear Oil in it.

thats what i've got in it, i just got it "diagnosed" at an aamco, and they say it is the synchros. And they estimated about $900 to $1000 as a rough estimate for a rebuild. Any suggestions?

Well, my only suggestion would be to call or search the net for a reman and see if you can get one cheaper. And if you are mechanically enclined you could with some help change it yourself. Manual Transmissions are pretty simple to change. The only part that may be a little difficult is when putting it back in lining up the splines going into the Clutch Plate. I would also reccommend changing the Clutch while there.
