Engine Mechanical problem
1988 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Manual

So my jeep has all of its lights working and I have tried to jump it and charge it but it will won't work. I am thinking that it is the starter. So how does one change a starter in a 1988 Jeep Cherokee?

Before removing the starter, try this. Have a helper turn the key to the start position while you check the smaller wire on the starter. It should be getting 12+ volts. If it is, then the starter is bad. If there is no power, it could be the starter relay, ignition, or other problem.

As far as removing the starter, disconnect the battery, remove the wiring on the starter (PASSANGER SIDE). THere are two bolts that hold the starter in place. Remove them and the starter will come off. Just reverse the sequence to replace it.

Let me know what you find. Also, if you remove the starter, most parts stores will bench test it for free.
