1986 Jeep Cherokee clutch hydraulic system

We have owned this jeep for 16 years. We have replaced the clutch master cylinder many times. The pedal will go to the floor and you have to pump it to get the pedal back. The fluiid will get very dirty. We just replaced the slave, master and line between master and slave. 5 monthas later it is doing it agian and fluid is also dirty again. I saw on the internet that many people have had this problem with different years. Does anybody have a solution to this?

When it is working properly, does the pedal feel hard to push? Cant think of a single reason that would happen other than an aftermarket clutch that is too stiff for the hydraulics.

No the clutch is not stiff. This has neen an on going problem for years.

I personally have never heard of it being an ongoing problem. What brand parts did yo use when it was all replaced? When the pedal goes soft... does it leak any fluid out?

The master cylinder does leak fluid where the push rod goes. I think the last replacedment was a Wagner. The parts company has just warrantied the master for the second time. The previous replacement was in April. I noticed that the previous two cylinders were cast iron and the one I just got is an aluminum one made in Taiwan. I do remember that the original was an aluminum made by Lucas.

That many problems, you might want try an OEM part.........
