2000 Jaguar S Type Fail Safe Mode Every 25 miles

I have 42,000 miles on my jaguar. I have had it in 4 shops, and my car runs fine for 25 miles, then check engine light comes on, and then it will run off and on in fail safe mode for another 25 miles and engine timing seems off when at a dead stop (engine revs slightly up and down)...then it is okay. Nothing.

Runs perfect for another 25 miles, then repeats the process all over again.

Have had codes checked, and it keeps referring to air intake code or something similar to that....Any help? No one seems to know what to do? The plastic covers are loose over the engine...would that make any difference? Do they have sensors knowing they are loose? It has to be something simple...the computer seems to be resetting itself every 25 miles.

Sounds like you may have a shorted Mass Airflow Meter

not a mass air flow meter. jag mass air flow meters hardly go bad on accasions they do. i need the codes that i generates to help you with the problem post again or email me at my email

You may have one or more ignition coils that are starting to go bad. Whenever an ignition coil goes bad, your vehicle will not idle smoothly but will pulsate. You will also feel a significant decrease in power and gas mileage. Your vehicle will also sputter when the accelerator is depressed. If you have any of these symptoms then you may be experiencing an ignition coil problem. The reason the coils go bad is that the spark plug seals leak oil into the spark plug wells and prematurely burn out the coils. To check it yourself (very easy to do) you will need to remove the ignition coil cover which is located on top o the valve cover. This is only about 14 X 2.5 inches and there are only six screws to remove. Once you have done that you will see four ignition coils each held in by only one screw. Once you remove the screw, detach the retaining clip (wire) and it will pull out. Once you have done this, take a flashlight and look inside each spark plug well and see it oil has entered.
