2004 Jaguar XJ8 shifting problems

the car will not shift into the next gear at 40mph. the rpm gauage jumps around tries to shift but have to give it gas to shift

Hello, two things, is the check engine light on, and did you check the transmission fluid level?

I am having the exact same problem between 35-45 mph. There are no warning lights on and all fluid levels are fine. My mileage is only 35,000. Any ideas on what to have a mechanic look at?

Have you checked the condition of the fluid? Does it have a burnt smell?
