1995 Jaguar XJ6 over filled with oil

Hi there, that is far to much oil, you will run the risk of blowing crank seals and doing other damage if the crank is actually striking the oil, drain it back to the correct level.

Thanks for the answer.
I was afraid of that. Would driving it at all do damage, even at low rpm? I need to drive it to the shop to have the oil drained as I do not have a place to drain it where it is locatd and the closest shop is about 10 miles away?

Hi there, if they over filled it i would be putting it on them to have it towed in, i would not be keen to dive it with it that full.

I was the d...a.. that over filled it. It was on a hill when I checked the oil and it showed to be almost empty so I filled it up. The orginial problem was there was and still is a grinding metal to metal sound when the engine is at idle. When I checked the oil I thought that it was out of oil, but was not the problem. So now I have two problems.

The grinding noise is a bit of a worry, with out hearing it, i definitely would not drive it, do you know if you had good oil pressure with this noise? may be the best thing to do first is to remove all the drive belts and run the engine, if the noise is gone, it wont be engine related, i would start here.

Thanks for your reply. I have drained the excess oil and to answer your questions. it is not a beal ot the A/c and yes the oil pressure is fine all of the gauges show normal there are no codes or lindicator lights on. How can I check the water pump?

Hi there,

Remove the pump belt and feel that there is no side movement in the pulley, spin it and feel for tight spots and noise, there should be no movement or any noise.
