I just bought a 1983 Jag xj6 that has been sitting for a while. I bought a new starter and solenoid and it works fine but the engine will not attempt to turn. I think the starter ring that the starter turns is locked up or rusted up. If I know that the starter is working is there a way to see if it is the starter ring without removing the engine, or how to you break the starter ring free? Any other ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Hi Jlawrence76, First off how long has the car been sitting up? 2nd the ring gear that you refer to is the flywheel which is attached to the crank. try this first, take all the spark plugs out, remove the coil wire from the coil and the distributor. Drop a few drops of engine oil into each spark plug hole, and then spin the motor over several times, till it spins freely. then put everything back and try starting the motor. Get back to me with your findings. It will smoke in excess for a while don't panic that's normal.
