1996 Jaguar Vanden Plas can't open the trunk

I've had the car for a couple of years but don't have an owner's manual so I've been learning on the fly. About a week ago I tried to open the trunk via the trunk release button in the car and by pushing the button on the trunk and have had no luck. Any advise would be welcome.
