1976 Jaguar Sovereign

I burned up a wheel bearing and the bearing cage welded it's self to the spindle or as the jag enthuisiast calls it the axle. I ordered a replacement axle and i am having difficult time removing the old one. can the assembly be heated to expand the fixture the axle is attached to? Is this a pressed fit? any info would be much appreciated. Luckily the axle is replaceable and Welsh Enterprises had one in stock it appears to be a taper fit with a stud and nylock nut to hold it in place.

Hi
Yes it is a tapeder fit and after all these years it is really stuck on. Are you using a ball joint spliter? looks like a big pickle fork? If no get one. No heat it is cast and bad things can happen. You can try hitting spindle at the hole the ball joint goes through. 5 lb. slege advised the blow will destort hole and release taper ball joint.

THE AXLE IS A STUB THAT IS BOLTED IN TO THE SPINDLE ASSEMBLY. SEE PICTURE AT WELSH ENT.COM. i DON'T KNOW HOW TO DESCRIBE THIS PIECE OTHER THAN IT IS TWO PIECES BOLTED TOGETHER, THE SPINDLE ASSY IS BETWEEN THE UPPER AND LOWER BALL JOINTS AND DRILLED TO ACEPT THE AXLE. tHE AXLE IS REPLACEABLE BUT IT APPEARS TO BE PRESSED OR TAPERED FIT. I'm not computer savey enough to figure out how to send you a link that shows the front assenbly

Went to welch site and no picture for axle. Can't find any info in data base for car that old sorry. Will keep trying

O.K. found what the deal. stub axle has nut to attach to spindle and another to attach bearing hub.
To remove axle remove nut and drive out then tap in new until you can get the nut on then tighten.
