My car was towed by a Tow Company called Mid-State Auto using a flatbed tow truck. When I went to pick the vehicle up, the shift selector was totally broken. There is no gearbox fault or transmission fault indicator lit. The Lit shifter indicator remains in park, while the selector easily moves throughout its entire range with no resistance. I Thought it was a broken shift cable but after replacing the shift cable the mechanic discovered the white clip, at the base of the shifter, that encloses the mechanisim which moves the shift cable was broken. First question, can just the clip be replaced or must the entire GEARSHIFT SHIFTER ASSEMBLY XR817754 be replaced.
While I pressed on the brake he manually attempted to shift out of park(at the transmission) from underneath the vehicle (since the clip is broken on the shifter) and it doesn't move or shift. It appears to be stuck in park. I wasnt pressing on what I believe is gearshift interlock latch at the time (from inside the car) so maybe that might prevent it from shifting. I'm thinking the gearshift interlock latch is on the right side of the shifter just opposite of the broken clip, is black and moves down if you press on it. The mechanic states that the transmission isnt locked and appears to be fine.
Second question, can you show me where the gearshift interlock latch is located in a diagram or picture.
THe mechanic believes that the tow company somehow jammed the shiftng mechanisn by elevating the car in park without the emergency brake on. Once the shifting mechanism became jammed they tried to physically force the shifter out of park breaking the clip at the base of the shifter.
The car ran perfectly fine until it was towed, we have already replace the shift cable, and will replace either the entire GEARSHIFT SHIFTER ASSEMBLY or just the clip(if thats possible). But I fear that something else mlight be wrong/jammed with the shifting mechanism because we are unable to manually shift it or maybe we arent doing something right.
Thanks
Carl
