Jagged hole in engine under valve cover

I was changing out my valve cover gasket and while I had the valve cover off I noticed a jagged hole. I just can't imagine any part of an engine that shouldn't be precise. Can you tell me if this hole is supposed to be there, and if not what problems it might cause and how it could have possibly got there. I have included pictures. Thank you much.
