6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual 140000 miles

have to replace water pump, to do so i have to remove crankshaft pulley, center bolt on pulley is so tight that the engine keeps turning over and i would like to know how to keep the engine from cranking so i can get the nut to turn also i would like to be sure what direction i should be turning the nut, i have been going opposite the direction of engine rotation but would like to make sure if that's correct.

Hi there,

yes this is very tight, best way for you to do this is to place it in 4th gear hand brake on and get a helper to stand on the brakes, this will lock up up the crank, it is a standard thread, it will turn to the Left to undo.

Turn to the left. I just took one off using a 450 ft/lb. impact wrench, 24 mm. Came off easy. Take out radiator to allow room for the impact wrench. This gets the bolt out easy. Now getting the pulley off is the hard part. Oh, be sure to put the engine in gear, hand brake on. I put my Trooper in 1st gear. Didn't budge.
