1996 Isuzu Trooper 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual

In trouble shooting loss of 12V to the cigarette lighter assembly I discovered a solder wire type jumper on the back. It was between the 12V male connector and the center terminal connector on the inside of the assembly. That link was open. The Chilton manual I have, aside from identifying the fuse number for the circuit, does not include it in the wiring diagrams or say anything about this fuse-type jumper. What is the purpose for having the fuse link when the circuit is protected by a 20A fuse? Is it acceptable to just use a solid jumper and allow the 20A fuse to provide the protection? If not, what fuse type jumper wire do I use and where can I get it? In the attached photo, the jumper is missing.

Probably a resistor...I dont see any attached photo?

This is in response to merlin2021 (topic ID 346600). The jumper was not a resistor. I tried to find the remains of it on my work bench but was not successful. Because the wire was so soft I touched it to a soldering iron and it melted like solder. That would not happen with standard wire that would be used with a resistor.

A resistor would only reduce the voltage to the device being plugged in and I can see no reason for doing that.

I tried twice to upload the picture (properly sized and in jpeg format) to the original message using your upload dialog box. In each case it said "done". I will do so again now. If it does not come through, can you send me an email address I can use to send it?

I did try to find a wiring diagram of the circuit, but was unsuccessful... Aftermarket lighters for your truck won't work?

The assembly is in very good condition so I can easily reuse it. All I have to do is install a new jumper on the end of it to complete the circuit where the old one was.

Since you folks don't have an answer, I am not sure who would except maybe Isuzu. I may give them a try but I doubt I will get through to the right people.

If not, I will just install a solid wire jumper and rely on the circuit fuse to provide the protection which is what I would have expected in the first place.

Just for your information, I finally realized that the short jumper on the back of the cigarette lighter assembly is to protect the unit from over-heating. It is a solder type wire that melts on high temperature of the cigarette lighter female receptacle to open the electrical circuit. If you push in the cigarette lighter and it sticks in the engaged position, then the whole unit could overheat.

I just went to the Isuzu recycler and picked up a replacement unit.
