when i turn the key all i hear is a clicking noise?

i've been having problems starting my isuzu rodeo. when i turn the key all i hear is a clicking noise. one guy told me that its my starter and that i should hit it w/ a hammer but not too hard... lol. someone else told me that its my battery.
