I took my Rodeo in this morning to get the power steering checked out. The mechanic told me that I definitely need to replace the power steering pump and hose. Only after replacing those two things would he know if I had to replace the rack as well. I don't want to spend $500 just to find out if I have to spend another $500. Is this really correct or am I getting taken for a ride?

well it sounds like you have a leak in the system. he should be able to fill the system with ps fluid and tell if the rack is good or not. i would get a second opinion. usually only 1 thing goes bad at a time, unless you have been driving it for a long time with no power steering. if it just stopped working and you brang it right to the repair shop, my guess is you probably only need to replace the hose only. the hose and pump wont go bad at the same time. something smells fishy if you know what i mean. hope this helps
