Hey, I'm new to this site and I just spent the last ten minutes writing a reply which I don't think went thru-so if this is a repeat I'm sorry. I have the same make and model with the same electrical problem--that's why I'm here. The same thing happened one year ago-minus my noticing the overcharging-with the trans slipping and the engine running rough and stalling. I noticed the spark plug wires were showing wear at the areas they were rubbing together. I purchased a new set of autolite professional wires from the local auto chain ($98.00) and that seemed to fix the problem. Exactly one year later, I pull out from a light, and the trans starts slipping, the trans light starts flashing along with the air bag light, the alt starts overcharging, and it won't pull and the engine won't idle. I get to looking at the wires and notice the same wear patterns and in the dark I can watch the spark travel down the wire--I don't think you are supposed to be able to do that. Thank goodness I got the lifetime warranty, so I replaced the wires and it runs much better now. The alt only overcharges at quick/high rpm. I think the electrical surge was screwing up the computer, and everything on my model is controlled by that dang computer. I'm still wondering if I have an alternator going bad or if the engine is still missing (bad spark plugs--hard for me to tell with the computer adjusting the engine). And I don't understand what is causing the spark plug wire breakdown. So check those spark plug wires (with the engine off--trust me) and see if they are worn. If this helps or you find out anything else please let me know.

I was just wondering if the alternator fixed the problem. I went four days of hard driving and put about 500 miles on my trooper with no problems and then it started again but very sporadic. I hoped that fixed your problem, but I still need help. Please let me know.

yup the alternator fixed it. call your dealer with your vin to get the part number. and go on ebay and buy a replacement. thats what i did. and had a local mechanic install it. it was 150 total. not bad becuase autozone wanted 190 plus tax and they had to order it too.
