2002 Isuzu Axiom 6 cyl 38,000 miles

I have a 2002 Axiom. About 11 months ago I had to spend $2200 b/c the electr wiring had failed. Last week I jsut had a tune up, everytinhg was fine....
this morning, my check engine light came on. Is it possilbe it's just a glitch. Last week the mechanic said that car was perfect. My fuel gauge is also not working properly but I was told it would be too mich $$ to fix... I filled up the tank but the light is still on. Can't afford another hue expense... any idea what causes the light to go on??? can a random mechanic just run a quick diagnostic (free of charge)?
