Engine noise?

You mentioned the codes returned after replacing the suspect sensors. Even though the engine is running better with the new plugs installed, are the codes still present? If so, can you provide these codes?

No, the codes are not present, the codes were P0700, P0716, and P0717. The car is driving better, but the engine is still sounding rough. I'm not sure if it would be one of the control modules causing the problem or not. The engine is sounding rough though, knocking or rattling sound or whatever you want to call it.

It sounds like you may have an injector going out. Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can hear the noise? that would be great. You can upload it here with your response. That way we can tell for sure whats going on.

See I'm not sure if you would call that a rattling or knocking, but it does not sound right and is not sounding smooth. it was driving better at first after I changed the spark plugs, but now it is starting to shift hard out of first gear again.

Thanks for the video, it helps. Let remove the serpentine belt and restart the engine to see if the noise is gone. Here is how:

Should I take off the A/C belt too or just the big one?

Okay, I watched the video and I'm not sure if it sounds problem free without the belt or not. I can kind of hear a sound in the video and I wasn't sure if it was a rattling or not. but it sounds so much better without the belt. it wasn't on the video but when I was standing there recording it I was hearing a humming sound. I wasn't sure if that was because the belt was off or if that is a problem also. does this help? Do you know what the problem is?

I ordered a transmission control module because I think that is the source of my problems, or at least some of them. did the video help? Were you able to figure anything out?

I agree, it sounds significantly better. It appears one of your engine accessories has a failed bearing. I would start by spinning each pulley (including the tensioner) and see if any of them feel rough. Based on the severity of the noise, I would expect you'll be able to feel it pretty easily.

Would that have anything to do with it shifting hard? Or do you also agree I have a problem with the transmission control module?

I think the two conditions are probably unrelated. Have any of the transmission codes returned?

Yea, my check engine light came back on. I have not went to get the codes checked, but every time I get them checked it is the same codes; P0700, P0716, and P0717 and I have replaced all of the sensors. previously I have replaced the throttle body with sensor, the transmission input sensor, and I replaced the gas pedal with sensor and I also replaced the connectors to the sensors in case of wiring going bad. I unplug the battery when I work on it, so the codes clear and it drives better for a short amount of time but then starts shifting hard again and throws the same codes. so I'm thinking at this point it would be the transmission control module?

Please let us know which accessory or belt tensioner is making the noise, sounds like a belt tensioner to me.

Yea. it was the tensioner pulley.

Actually, I forgot about the position of the tensioner pulley when I tested it and it was resting up against something since it is not in tension. I pushed it out with my ratchet and gave it a spin and it is rotating just fine, the idler pulley also is rotating freely and so is the alternator. The power steering pulley does not make noise when I rotate it and seems to turn smoothly but does not rotate freely when I spin it, it will only make a rotation or two before stopping. The water pump pulley rotates freely but makes a noise when I rotate it.

The water pump sounds pretty rough to me too. I would definitely say that's the source of your noise. Below is the procedure on how to replace a water pump. There's also a great video of the procedure towards the end of the article.

You may also want to verify that the belt tensioner arm is not binding. When you load and unload the spring tension on it, make sure it moves smoothly from the full tension point to the fully unloaded position.

The belt tensioner moves back and forth fine. there is just some noise in the spring, is that okay?

Yes, a little noise from the spring is fine as long as it moves freely.
