Inside dome light won't light with an open door

My son and Daughter-In-Law just gave me their like-new 2004 Honda Accord and I'm getting used to its unique characteristics--and have questions! The interior dome light only comes on with the dome light switch and not the door open sense switches. I've searched the owners manual and found nothing about this 'feature'. Is there a programming feature for this? Yes, they have a new baby and may have programmed it not to come on.
