1993 Infiniti G20 Loud sqealing possibly metal on metal

My 93 infiniti g20, is making a very loud sqealing noise. It began on startups and progressed to
80-90% of the time. It makes the noise with the a/c on or off. I had the belts inspected while the noise was not being made and was told my belts are tight. I popped the hood while it was making the noise and it sounded like it could be coming from the back park of the engine compartment or the back left side.

You mentioned left, does that mean looking at engine from front? That is to say it is on passenger side?

If yes, the things that can cause squealing noises are the water pump and power steering pump or the belt. This would not be affected by the AC compressor.

When noise appears, try splashing some water onto the belt and note if the noise level changes. Was the condition of belt and tension checked while checking the AC belt?

i ended up taking it to a shop today and they gave me an idea of what could also be a possibility and please tell me if you agree. The shop tech said it could be the starter staying engaged...

to answer your question, i do not know if the a/c was engaged when the belts were checked or not.

Also I had the water pump and power steering hose replaced about 5-6 month.

I think in the long run its better to cut my loses with this car and get a newer one. Parts for Infiniti are not cheap and things constantly seem to keep nickel and dimming me out of money.

In fact my initial feeling was it could possibly be the starter motor staying engaged. This could be due to a bad ignition switch. But you mentione left side of rear area so I was not certain which is left, driver side is left, but if looking at engine compartment passenger side is left. Some customers do make this mistake.

When problem happens, try turning the ignition key slightly back, just enough to disengage the starting circuit but not enough to turn engine off, and see if the noise goes away.

Cars are similar to humans, the older it gets, the more parts requires attention.

Ill call them and see if they would like to make use of your tip, if they don't when i get the car back ill try it out, for a Virginia State Inspetion, would this fail my car? Also how much do you believe it would cost to repair parts and maybe an average labor cost?

If the problem happens when inspection is being carried out, it could fail.

If it is the ignition switch, OEM list price is $52.57. Labor time is 1.1 hours.

Prices and rates might vary so you need to check locally for the correct price.
