As above the car will crank over but will not start.
image of a car with a key through the middle of it illuminates on the dashboard blinks three times and goes out.

Also, the central locking has stopped working.
If anyone has any ideas I would be very happy to hear them. many thanks in advance. Mark

If the non starting occurred immediately after the central locking system stopped working, the problem is most probably related and could be due to a blown fuse for the security system.

Start with a check on the fuses and replace if any found bad.

Many thanks for the reply. this check has been done and no fuses were found to be blown, the other work carried out was to have both keys and fobs checked by an auto locksmith and he confirmed that the transponders in the keys were operating as they should.

Initial checks passed means we have to go further up the chain to diagnose the problem and locate the source.

The link above explains how to go about looking for causes and what should be present when getting the engine to start.

Let us know what you find.
