Hello,

You can get a key cut from your local dealer. Another option would be to have an automotive locksmith cut a key.

Either option you will likely need to provide proof of ownership, so they can make the new key.

You should not have to remove the lock cylinder. As they can make the key using the information from the VIN of that truck.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you

You will have to remove the steering wheel to access the lock cylinder.

See the diagrams below.

Yes, thank you. This will not affect the truck? It doesn't have a chip, correct?

Sean M is one of our best experts and has a lot of qualifications. I am not sure how qualified this other person is, but it appears Sean M is correct that the 1997 did not have a transponder key.

Not only is there no info in the online manual about transponder keys for 1997 which means it was not equipped, but I had a 1997 F-150 and it should have the standard key.

If you can get a picture of your key that will help. However, I suspect if you have a key that has a transponder in it, that is just because someone thought that you needed one and cut the metal part to fit your truck, but the chip serves no function.

So, your key may have a chip, but the truck does not require one.

I attached the chart below showing that there was just a standard key through 1998. Then the second picture is of a standard key which is what you should have. Then the last is of a transponder key.

Again, if your key looks like the last picture then I suspect that it was just because someone assumed that is what was needed.

Plus, here is a video that shows this as well. You can clearly see in the video that they have standard keys, and this is a 1998.

Hopefully this helps and if you have conflicting info, we would appreciate the proof that this other person is providing you because I thinking they are incorrect.

Thanks
