I installed a new ignition lock cylinder/switch and it started my car a few times within five minutes and did not work since on 8/24/18. It is not the starter because it starts from me sticking a knife in the starter relay. What is wrong? Is there something I did not do?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

You replaced the key tumbler and not the actual ignition switch. The first thing to check is to make sure the connection at the switch itself is clean, tight, and not damaged.

Here are the directions for checking the switch itself if the connection is good. The first two pictures correlate with this test:

_________________________________

1. Disconnect the ignition switch connector and key warning switch connector from under the steering column.
2. Check for continuity between the terminals.
3. If continuity is not specified, replace the switch.

Let me know what you find.

Chances are the new switch has failed. Did you get it from a dealer?

Hi again.

I am not sure if your vehicle has anti-theft, but if it does and what Ken mentioned is happening, here are the directions for turning the system off. These directions are right from Kia.

1. Unlock and open the door with the key, which will cause the alarm to be activated.

2. Insert the key in the ignition switch and turn the ignition key to "on" position.

3.Wait for thirty seconds.

With immobilizer system: 1. Unlock and open the door with the key, which will cause the alarm to be activated.

2. Insert the key in the ignition switch and turn the ignition key to "start" position.

After completing the steps above, the system will be disarmed.

Let me know if this helps.

Take care,
Joe
