i can drive my truck for about five or six miles and it starts to bog down and if i try to keep going it will eventually shut down, when that happens i have to get out and sand down my points and then it runs fine for another another five or six miles. what could it be?

What kind of problem are you having? Why would you want to go back to miserable breaker points? Do you have a ballast resistor in series with the ignition coil and a way to bypass it during cranking?
