Ignition cylinder

So I took off the original ignition switch and cylinder off my car, as I try to put it back together the cylinder will not go all the way in the ignition switch, it goes in but as I turn the cylinder it feels like only the cylinder is turning not the switch. what could be the problem? I know it fits because it is the same one I took off.

Can you post pictures of the parts so I can see what is going on? I used to have one of these cars and it sounds like you do not have it timed correctly.

If that last picture in the switch it looks pretty worn out. These switches must be installed with the release pin pressed inward (paper clip). Have you replaced the switch by removing the bezel turn it counter clockwise?

I was able to fix the problem with the ignition switch but the reason why I changed it was because when I try and turn on the car it won't start, I usually start the car in neutral but even then it won't click it won't do nothing, what I have to do now to start the car is by using a screwdriver and touching the 2 ends of the starter solenoid, I already replaced the starter solenoid and the ignition switch what else could be the problem?

It sounds like the neutral safety switch is shorted out. Here is a guide to help you confirm the failure so you can get it fixed. The switch is located on the transmission near the gear selector shaft.
