Idle increases when you shift into Drive or Reverse

Just put a new head on. initial test drives went fine. After sitting for a while, car starts fine and idles normal. then shift into reverse the rpm jumps up about 500 rpm or so. shift to neutral and the car returns to normal idle. shift into drive and the rpm increases again. problem was there for the entire 30 mile drive.

Any idea's??
