Recently my mother noticed that the auto transmission gears have become hard to shift. Anything we can do to fix this ourselves?

Hello,

Not quite sure what you mean by Hard to Shift....

Is the shifting Delayed - Takes longer than usual to shift.

or

Does it shift Hard - When it does shift you can really feel it shift.

Also is your engine light on? if so will need to have codes pulled. Your local parts store will do it and usually for free.

It would appear that when she shifts from park to drive or reverse it is harder to do so, sort of like it is sticking.
I tried it myself and it was hard for me as well.
I talked to her today and she said it seemed easier, maybe just a fluke?.
No engine light came on. Thanks for your quick response.

Ok, I don't know if you can or are willing to try... So.... Here is what can be done to see what may be causing the hard shifting from Park to Reverse/Drive... In the Picture below the area circle is the Transmission Range Switch and Cable. It is located under the hood on top of the transmission, it may be hard to see if there is a lot of stuff over top of it. What you will need to do is get to so you can see it good, the Smaller Circle, to see how it cable comes off. I believe it just pops up and off but not sure haven't worked on them to much. If you cannot figure out how it comes off and you are able to take a picture or 2 and post them here....

If you do get it off go ahead and try shifting from park to reverse and drive. If it still shifts hard then you have a problem either in the steering colunm or a bad shift cable. If shifts normally then you have a problem in the transmission and you will need to take it to a transmission shop. .
