how do you know if your axle is broken? would my tire appear 'bowed'? I just recently had a blow out on the freeway and replaced my left rear tire (the tire in question)....thank you!

If it is leaning, chances are it needs realigned. If the axle broke, you would have known it. It would be slaping around on the underside of the vehicle and off the road.
