Yesterday we were driving home and came to a stop light, stopped and waited and once the light changed went to accelerate forward and immediately the vehicle jerked and whined. You could hear a grinding and we proceeded to roll backwards. Applied the brake and tried to accelerate forward again and nothing. Reverse was out as well. Rolled the car backward to a safe spot and tried to park however this was shot as well, we continued to roll backwards. Applied brake and emergency brake. Upon placing the vehicle into park a hard grinding and loud whine came from the engine compartment. Believe this to be some sort of transmission failure yet before we spend a quoted $4000 on this vehicle for a new tranny I just purchased thirty days ago from an independent source I would like to know if I need to replace that entire transmission or if there may be something else we could do?

Take the vehicle to a trans shop .. they will be better to advise on the exact fault .. most probably you could have the existing trans reconditioned at a reasonable price !!
