Transmission

I own a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon SE with 16,300 miles. I recently noticed after driving with the radio turned down that the gearbox or transmission (not sure) is very whiney. Especially on gears 1,2,3, and 4. Once I hit 5 and 6, it gets a lot softer. It seems to be driving fine, just noisy/whiney.

Could this be the gearbox or manual transaxle? Or, possibly the motor? Although I dont think its the motor because its quiet once I disengage gears. The service light has not come on, and I had the oil change at 14,000.

I am just starting to learn about cars. Any tips you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

I would be checking/ changing the transmission oil first, check the drain plug for any metal fragments that could indicate baring failure, (silver grey deposits) noises in these gears and not in 5/6 would indicate lay shaft bearings are your concern, check the oil level first.
