I was suddenly unable to shift gears.
There appears to be a disconnect between shift lever and gearbox. I can get the car into gear by moving the mechanism at the transmission manually, the transmission end of the connecting cables (shift lever to transmission) are connected ok. Once in gear, by pushing the gearstick forward, it will move the car out of gear, but nothing after that. A diagram of how it all connects at the gearshift lever end would be a help before I try to pull it all apart. Any brief suggestions on checking out the mechanism would also be helpful.

I live in Australia and the Excel was still available here in 96. Its the same car as the '94 and '95
very similar to the Elantra which replaced it.

I will send what I have, but it's not too specific about the shift levers, Check the allen lock screw on the side of it, it may have loosened up.

thanks for that, useful info in any case. It turned out to be a broken bowden cable between the lever mechanism and the gearbox. Had to replace the whole set as they come as an assembly. Fiddly job getthing the cables in and out but got there in the end. Shifting a lot more precise now with very little play in the linkages. cheers, Thankfully it was nothing worse.
