what do i look for when the error code indicates cylinder 5 misfire but the engine runs fine at idle and on the road?

Most common cause would be the spark plugs or ignition coil. Check for contaminations and presence of water or oil in plug tubes.
Try swapping the coil with another cylinder to test. Check spark plug conditions and swap with another cylinder different from the coil swap to test.
