Hi leslieannmarcobrewster,

It sounds like you have a hazard switch or flasher that is out but to be sure here is a guide to help us test the power and grounds and the brake light wiring diagrams to help you do the tests.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-wiring

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

Electrical problem
2002 Hyundai Elantra 75000 miles

2002 Hyundai Elantra... After driving home one night, stopped at the gas station and noticed that the brake lights were on while the car was off.

Drove home, and noticed that the brake lights were still on, even after the lights were turned off and the engine turned off.

When pressing down on the brake pedal, the central brake light (in the back window) does not turn on, and while driving, its as if the two taillight brake lights are always depressed.

most likely culprit is sticky/faulty brake light switch, located above brake pedal.

A small magnet the size of 2 pennies will work great. That's what I had my husband use for a temporary fix.

it cold be a shorted wire doing this but have it scanned for codes by a mechanic as it may be an ABS problem like a bad sensor or shorted wire.

Hi there,

Check the brake light switch is not faulty, it is on top of the brake pedal under the dash.

When I turn off the motor and remove the key, the brake lights remain on. I have checked what I believe to be the ground near the rear of the trunk. At this time, I am pulling the fuse so that my battery won't be drained. Do I have a short somewhere maybe?

Hi there,

This will normally be a faulty brake light switch which is located at the top of the brake pedal under the dash.

1993 Hyundai Elantra. Just recently I discovered that my brake lights will not turn off. When I lift the brake (from underneath) just a little, the lights will turn off. But, when the brake is left in the normal resting position, the lights stay on. Is it possible that the spring that pulls that the brake up while not in use is worn out and that there is not enough tension to pull it high enough to where the lights won't turn on? If so, do I need to order that part from my dealer?

It sounds as if the brake light switch needs to be adjusted. It is located on the brake pedal leakage up under the dash.

Stop Everything! there was recalls on the newer types of of these cars and the problem still exists back then, before replacing the Brake Switch First is to check if your Brake Light Switch Stopper is not missing evidence of Broken rubber or plastic on the drivers floor is a indication. this is a very common problem with these types of cars and I'm not only saying Hyundai but also honda and other models has also same problem.
on the 2004 Hyundai Elantra The stopper is located on the Brake Pedal arm and if its missing the brake light switch will not turn off because the Plunger will go through the hole where the stopper was and not turn the switch off.

A quick fix is double sided tape and a penny but better to fix it properly get a new stopper and replace it than risking your life.
