2002 Hyundai Elantra Idles rough in "Drive"

My daughters 2002 Hyundai Elantra drives fine, it does hesitate when it’s cold. But the real problem is that it idles very rough when it is in drive or reverse; when it’s in park or neutral it idles fine. That I can tell there aren’t any vacuum leaks. I’m out of ideas… Please help.

Check for any codes in the computer is the first thing I would do. IT may or may not give us a clue to start with.

The 2.4 motor did have a problem with crank sensors. More typically after a timing belt failure. The pattern of the signal it puts out can be checked with a quality scanner.

Also I would try unplugging the egr valve connector ans see if it changes the condition. There is a tsb on this one if I remember right. If it does change the idle prob, then replace the egr valve.

Do the same on the MAF sensor if it still exists.
