2001 Hyundai Elantra Loss of power steering

I was driving home this afternoon, when all of a sudden I had a loss of power steering, and now it takes a lot of effort to turn the wheel. I have owned cars in the past that do not have power steering, and this loss of steering feels worse than driving a car with no power steering. Please advise what I should be looking for and what the problem might be.
