2000 Hyundai Elantra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

2000 Hyundai Elantra, miles: 82,000 My Elantra quit running, when I was drivving in the highway, pulled off to the side road, notice steam coming out the right front of the hood, the anti-freezer deposit was steaming out. The car did not started back on. The mechanic thinks is the timing belt. Does this sound as though the timing belt has broken, and if so is it true the piston will hit the valves causing severe engine damage. Do you think that may be what we're looking at, and if so can you tell me approximately how much we are looking at to do the necessary repairs?
