This cover must be fitted first. and before the pulley is installed. It locates on dowels and should not be a problem to locate.

i put a new timming belt and new idler and tentioner pullys on my 99 hyundai Elantra. the head has been fixed. the car runs great but the timing belt walks to tha outsine and is starting to wear the outside of the belt any help

Hi there,

This will be an alignment problem with the belt pulleys, check all bearings are OK, check mounting for tensioner pulley and idler pulley if fitted, check crank pulley is seated fully back, a new belt will have to be fitted when this is sorted as the old belt is damaged, start here.

BEEN TRYING 3- WEEKS ABOUT TO GIVE UP? TRYING TO FIND TDC ON CRANK I LINE UP THE MARKS AND PUT CAM IN TIME AND STILL ONLY RUNS SLOW WANT SPEED UP. COULD I HAVE IT 180 OUT LIKE A CHEV. I DO PUT THE CAM MARKS AT 10 DEGREES

Hi PUGMAN2828, Did you get the markings correct? Note the crank pulley key mark. If you are not sure, remove the one sat spark plug and use a long screwdriver to manually test the TDC position and note the marking.

The chain we have has 2 dark links but it does not align with the 5 links as we were told, could you send a description and picture of the layout with respect to the timing marks. The problem we have is no infomation avail being on a pacific island, many thanks. James Reilly.

Take note that the links would not match up after you turn the engine. It would only match up again after many turns but I don't have the data how many turn it should be.

Service and Repair REMOVAL

1.Remove the crankshaft pulley, coolant pump pulley and drive belt.

2.Remove the timing belt cover.

3.Remove the timing belt tensioner pulley.

4.Remove the timing belt. NOTE: If the timing belt is reused, make an arrow indicating the turning direction (or the front of the engine) to make sure that the belt is reinstalled in the same direction as before. 5.Remove the idler pulley.

6.Remove the camshaft sprocket. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the cylinder head with the wrench. 7.Remove the crankshaft sprocket from crankshaft. INSTALLATION

1.Install damper pulley flange and crankshaft sprocket as shown. Pay close attention to their mounting direction. 2.Install the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolt, to the specified torque. Tightening torque: Camshaft sprocket bolt: 100-120 Nm (1000-1200 kg.cm, 74-89 ft. lbs.)

3.Align the timing marks of the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket with the No. 1 piston placed at top dead center and its compression stroke. 4.Install the timing belt tensioner and idler pulley. 5.Install the timing belt on the camshaft 6.Install the timing belt on the crankshaft. When the timing belt is installed on the camshaft sprocket, make sure that the tension side is tighten the timing belt tensioner pulley pushing toward the water pump.

7.Turn the crankshaft one turn in operating direction (clockwise) and realign crankshaft sprocket timing mark. CAUTION: Do not turn the crankshaft in a counterclockwise direction. The crankshaft should be turned smoothly. Tightening torque: Tensioner pulley installing bolt: 43-55 Nm (430-550 kg.cm, 32-41 ft. lbs.)

8.Then recheck the belt tension. The tension side of timing belt is pushed in horizontally with a moderate force [approx. 2 kg (20 N, 5 lbs.)] , the timing belt cog end is approx. 4-6mm (0.16-0.24 inch) away. 9.Install the timing belt cover. Tightening torque Timing belt cover bolt: 8-10 Nm (80-100 kg.cm, 6-7.4 ft. lbs.)

10.Install the crankshaft pulley. In this case, make sure that the crankshaft sprocket pin fits the small hole in the pulley. Tightening torque: Crankshaft pulley bolt: 170-180 Nm (1700-1800 kg.cm, 125-133 ft. lbs.) 11.Install the coolant pump pulley. 12.Install the drive belt and adjust the belt tension. https://www.2carpros.com/kpages/auto_repair_manuals_alldata.htm

timing mark location for crankshaft

Ignition timing or Valve timing which involves the cam and crank alignment

total valve timing.involves 1.8 dohc cam and crank timing.i have marks for the cam.cannot locate marks on crankshaft gear ...is this crankshaft timing mark on the flange plate which sits behind the crankgear?..I have been given two timing locations..one at 11 o clock and the other at 1 o clock..which is correct??..exactly where are the crank shaft marks??I see nothing on the gear or teeth??thanks bruce

1994 Hyundai Elantra 5 speed 1.6L I4 mileage: 130,000. Hi guys, my question is, about a year ago, I had my timing belt replaced; it was a preventative maintenance repair, not because it broke. Then after about 3 months, my car lost power on the highway one day, I took it to a repair shop, and it was determined that the timing belt was not installed properly (it was off by a couple of teeth). Ever since then, the car has had a rough idle. Now because of the rough idle, it causes the muffler to shake, and make a weird noise. I'm trying to sell the car now, but I would like to fix the rough idle first, if it isn't to expensive. Is raising the idle speed a little a good thing to do, or is this an even bigger problem?

You can try raising the idle speed but we do not think it will smooth out the idle. You may have a bigger problem. Have a compression check done on the engine; it may check low. When the timing belt was off "by a couple of teeth," that changed the timing between the valves and the pistons. That change may have resulted in a valve hitting a piston bending a valve or two.
