I have to fix my mothers 1999 Hyundai Elantra

I am not a novice to these cars I own a 2000 elantra with 175k have replaced almost every part and touched every screw.

Her car is 1999 Elantra with 55k automatic

What she did she drove with the engine light on for about a month before telling me. I got the error code which was - P0441 - Purge Control Valve. Before I could replace the purge valve she says the engine died on her when she was driving to work. She says the exhaust manifold got cherry red. Then had a mechanic tow it and told her its the engine CPU and would cost over $1k to fix.

I dont live with her so now I get my hands on it. Starts right up but runs extremely rough. New engine code exists P0303 - which is cylinder 3 misfire. Doesnt sound like a misfire but I removed the flex pipe (right after the cat) and the exhaust smells like its running rich. Also can see red ambers coming out of the exhaust manifold (remember I removed the flex)

I replaced the CPU and Purge Control Valve which had no effect on the engine (I did reset the CPU after each). I have looked up the issues from PO303 but plugs and wires are fine (been replace 15k ago) It seems to be lacking power but compression test seems ok?

I will check for spark coming off the coil pack for each cylinder.

What else can I check or troubleshoot on this ? Anything else to look for to narrow this down? I not trying to just randomly start replacing parts lol.

Have you checked the catalytic converter to see if it is plugged?
