My car often gives me crank but no start problem, but then it starts after some time if I let it sit for five minutes or so. Earlier it use to be once in a month problem, then it got once in a week, and now it is happening more frequently. I am suspecting that the fuel pump is gradually going bad. However, I do want to diagnose the exact problem, rather than just blindly changing the part. Question is, how do I diagnose fuel pressure/pump/regulator or filter issue with this car, when I am unable to locate any schrader valve in the fuel lines? Is there diagnosing guide I can follow for this car model?

Now on further researching on Hyundai customers reporting same problems with other models, it came out to me that bad IAT sensor can cause the same problem. But I am not sure where is this located in my car. I am really looking for a step by step troubleshooting guide to diagnose this intermittent hard start problem ? Please help.

Hello,

The first thing I would check is the trouble codes to see if anything shows up.
Here is a guide for that and the hard starting troubleshooting guide:

and

You can connect a fuel pressure gauge but it goes inline at the connection by the engine. (tee) any good fuel injection kit should have the adapter you can rent one for free from the auto parts store.

Please let us know what you find.

Hi Ken,
There is no stored OBDII code in the system, I did scan it. And for checking the fuel pressure, I was researching it looks like my Hyundai model needs these two special adapters to connect the fuel line with fuel pressure guage, and they are expensive adapters. Please let me know, if you suggest any other way around to measure the fuel pressure.
09353-24000 - Fuel Pressure Gauge Connector
09353-38000 - Fuel Pressure Gauge Adapter

I encountered the same problem again this afternoon twice, and I did notice a pattern. I started the car, it started fine, then it shut off immediately. Then I cranked the engine and it went non-stop without starting. Then I primed the pump for two to three cycles by going from key off to accessory on position, and tried again and the car started. And car always runs smooth and no idling situation either after its started. So I am thinking, is it the clogged fuel filter (which is part of fuel pump assembly) or the fuel pump itself is bad, and multiple priming shocks it to run it again ? Any opinion ? And do you know if I can buy the fuel filter separate on this car, or it comes as whole assembly ?

Attaching the snapshot of bluedriver live scan, shows certain parameters I monitored when it was not starting on cranking.

Also, attaching the attachment guide for fuel pressure testing with adapters I mentioned above.

The fact that you can get the engine to run correctly by priming the pump multiple times tells me you have found the problem a weak and failing fuel pump.

Here is a guide to help you see what you are in for when doing the job:

Check out the diagrams (below).

Please let us know what happens.

Sorry I forgot to post updates here, for now I m just making my way out by priming the pump if it gets stuck on me, and also making sure that the gas tank never goes below half, so I am forcing pump to work extra hard. I will wait till this completely pump dies for replacing it, as it is an expensive assembly if buy new.
