My friend has a 2001 Accent. It won't start. I took it the shop and the conclusion is that the ECM needs to be replaced. I would like to get an ECM off EBAY for $100 but I am getting conflicting stories. Some say the ECM will have to be re-programmed and some say it's plug and play. If it has to be re-programmed I understand it is about $100 but am not sure if the car has to be towed there or if they can program the ECM without the car. My friend has no money and I have the $80 diagnostic charge into it already. I would like to get the car running and sell it for him so he can have some extra money and I am willing to get the ECM but if it has to be programmed the money is getting too much especially if it doesn't fix the problem.

What's wrong with it that you need another PCM?

Well the car wouldn't start. It happened gradually over a week or so then finally it wouldn't start at all. The mechanic said there were about 12 different codes that came up. He checked several of the sensors and they all check okay. He said there was fuel and spark.

He said there was fuel and spark. Now all you need is compression for it to fire up that's if its within specs-and the injectors are pulsing also if the valve and iginition timing are off-she won't start

12 codes don't convinced me-on the PCM,well its your shot on a new brain.

Well I'm not completely convinced either but I have to trust my mechanic at this point. Like I said I'm not willing to put much more money into it. Which leads me to my intial question. Are the PCM's for the 2001 Accent just plug and play if I got a used one off EBAY or would it have to be reprogrammed? I know the 2005 and later cars need to have the VIN burned in but I am not sure about the earlier ones.

The mechanic at Just Answer said it is plug and play. Boy this is a tuff one. I can't seem to get a string of answers that make me confident in purchasing the ECM.
