What is a Throttle Position Sensor and what does it do? And why do you think it might be that?

The TPS (throttle position sensor) offers variable resistance depending on the winding or unwinding of its actuator. When you goose the throttle, or take your foot off the gas, the TPS tells your vehicle's computer where the throttle is. Look under your hood at your fuel rail or throttle body. On one side you will see the terminus of the throttle cable and the cam around which the cable is wound. Directly on the opposite side of the throttle body from here, you will see the TPS.

This could be the cause of your issues because if it is faulty then it may be sending a wrong signal to your vehicle's computer, in return the throttle will shoot the revs up to an unwanted range.

Hello - Well, let's do a couple of things. First is your vehicle a GL Sedan, GS hatch Back or L Hatch Back? Next, there may be a recall for this very thing......I have attached it. Please contact the dealer to see if it applies to you. The recall does involve the Throttle Body and the problem causes high idle. No guarantees, but worth checking into. Contact the dealer, Service Department and provide them with our VIN and they will be able to tell you if it applies to you. While checking on those, I have attached 4 Safety recalls you can check on also. Recalls are normally paid by the dealer at no cost to the consumer. Next, since you can not probably do this until Monday, please go to Auto Zone or O'Reilly's and for FREE they can pull the codes to the car. Most important: Once they check your codes, if they find something and you don't get it fixed and need to get back with us, please make sure you tell us exactly what the code was, number and all. Example, if the code was E0568 O2 Sensor bad. Then make sure you give us all of that. While there for FREE also they can bring their tester out and check your battery, alternator and starter. As for the transmission - I don't think this has anything to do with each other but why did you know it was the transmission and not the clutch that needed replacing? BlueLightning/Impala SS: Okay I will tell my mechanic that. Anything else you think it might be?

What about the car shaking so badly when I am idle? Is that a fault tranny mount to the engine? I am totally guessing here...

Impala SS: It is a GL sedan.

I replaced the transmission because my car suddenly one night last week in the middle traffic decided to stop going in gear. so I pulled off the road and the gear shifter was "dead" or basically I could move it in a continuous circle around and around. so my mechanic said he checked everything (cables, bolts whatever) outside of the tranny and nothing worked so it had to be inside the tranny. so I got a rebult tranny (apparently Accents have trouble with these "plates" or something inside the tranny - know problem) and while the tranny was out/down I had them put in a new clutch becasue it would be no more labor and I know the clutch was starting to go.

I fit the recall - but will they honor a recall this late in 2008 when it was created in 2002?

Most dealers will honor a recall for up to 10 years from the release of the vehicle. It is different for each vehicle though so only your dealer will be able to tell you if you will have to pay for labor/parts.

For the shaking, I would suggest having the motor mounts and transmission mounts both checked. The bushings could be worn out or the mount itself may not be bolted properly.

Thank you guys so much for the help and thanks for finding the recall! Maybe that will help with RPM problem. *fingers crossed* For right now I will get my mechanic that did my tranny to check the bolts and stuff to hopefullly fix the shaking problem and then I will call the dealer to see if I can get the recall taken care of.
