It just started yesterday, when I backed out of the driveway, I heard a whining noise. When I stopped or was in forward motion, there is no noise. Only on backing. It's not when I'm braking, only backing up. It's due for an oil change, had last tune up at 60k, I'm over 92k now. Are my wheels going to fall off? Can I ignore it till payday?

Get the transmission oil changed, Reverse gear is what is known as a straight cut gear and it also uses an extra gear call an idler, this is what actually changes the direction of the drive, these gears are noisier than helical gears used in forward speeds, it may just be a case of low oil, if that won't fix it you may have to remove the box and inspect for a failed bearing or bush.
