How to remove serpentine belt tensioner?

I have not done one in some time on the V6. However, I believe you can access it through the inner fender. Here are the directions for belt replacement. It shows how to access the tension-er. Take a look through this and let me know if it will help.


REMOVAL
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL RH
2. REMOVE FRONT FENDER APRON SEAL RH
3. REMOVE V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
4. REMOVE V-RIBBED BELT
(a) Using SST, release the belt tension by turning the belt tension-er counterclockwise, and remove the V-ribbed belt from the belt tension-er.

I checked labor for replacement. It calls for 4.5 hours. Ugh! It is starting to come back to me. It was not too easy.

Yes, it verifies the alternator must come out which in turn means the radiator must come out as well. Much appreciated. I can see why it says 4.5 hours for labor. Thank you sir for your help.

Hi,
I went to the dealer with a chirping noise from under the hood near the serpentine belt area. They checked and said it was the belt that was bad and replaced it costing me $148 with almost 1.2 hrs of labor charges. The noise is still there and then they said it is the belt tensioner and it needs to be replaced. The tech said it is a 4-5 hour job and would cost me $575-$600. IS that true? How hard is it to replace the tensioner? I thought the tensioner pulley was right on the top of the crank shaft pulley, pretty much the same region where you would loosen in the first place to change belt. Are they trying to rip me off? or the 1.2 hours already spend on labor they could have done the tensioner. Am I correct? Please advice!!!
The noise is still there. Its low when waiting at a light and driving, but when I turn on the A/C its more prominent when idle. I even asked them if the belt is loose and just needs to be tightened. But he was standing on his head with the tensioner.

Which engine do you have?Also they should have caught the bad tensor when they looked at it originally. What's your zip code so I can get you a price on replacing it.

its V6 3.5L engine. 02467 is my zip code. So you mean to say that when changing the belt they would have seen it in the first place that tensioner needs to be replaced too. Well before they changes the belt the guy came up to me and said just the belt needs to be changed even though I asked him if it was for sure. So I guess I need to go back and bust them on it or go to a different place? I would have to pay more for the labor again???

the V6 calls for 4.5 hours. The 4 cyl is only an hour. The labor time I see is . 9hrs a total of 228.11 at a independent repair shop.I also see just the belt to replace it is .7 hrs labor and a total of 108.86 to replace that at the dealer.I would talk to the service manager about it.They should have caught especially since the belt was still squealing when you left with the car.

It’s a easy fix and doesn’t require many tools.... probably a 2 hour job at the most. They do have to take the belt off in order to replace the tensioner though.

Refer to our homepage under the DIY section for belt repairs. There are schematics there for belt routing.

As far as the tensionier replacement, you need to remove the belt, unbolt and remove the tensionier, and reverse the order to replace it.

To replace the drive belt assembly.

One of the bolts (because it hits the cars body).
Is it true that you use a jack with a piece of wood and push up on the oil pan and lift about an inch or two, to give the bolt room to slide out?

I need to replace the serpentine belt. It has a hydrolic belt tensioner. It looks like the nut that you crank on to release pressure so i can remove, but it is broken. Everything else is okay. I think this nut is just to release pressure so hat to have to change out the whole tenisionor. How else can i release pressure? I do not weld. Is there something else i can loosen?

REPLACEMENT

4. REMOVE ENGINE MOVING CONTROL ROD W/BRACKET




a) Remove the 3 bolts and control rod.

5. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING STAY NO.2 RH
6. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET NO.2 RH
7. REMOVE FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT




a) Slowly turn the belt tensioner clockwise for more than 3 seconds , and remove the drive belt by using SST.

8. INSTALL FAN AND GENERATOR V BELT




a) Slowly turn the belt tensioner clockwise for more than 3 seconds , and install the drive belt by using SST.

9. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING BRACKET NO.2 RH Torque: 52 Nm (531 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.)
10. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING STAY NO.2 RH Torque: 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.)
11. INSTALL ENGINE MOVING CONTROL ROD W/BRACKET




a) Install the engine control rod with the 3 bolts.
Torque: 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.)

12. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL RH Torque: 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.)

How do you adjust the drive belt tensioner. It does not allow enough movement to change the belt. THe Hynes manual says to "remove the driver bolt", but I'm not sure what that is.

From what I can find it say's that it is an automatic tensioner so therefor there is no adjustment. Here is a diagram of what I see.
