How to remove headlight switch

I need to remove the headlight switch (which works fine) in order to remove the panel molding. I need to remove the panel in order to replace the wiper switch.

I've read many descriptions online but none of the suggested solutions work for me. The shaft on my headlight switch is triangular in shape. There is a notch on the knob but there is no tab that I can find that can be depressed or levered to remove it. I can't find a diagram that shows my switch components. If there is a retaining nut as some write-ups have said, I can't find it.

This photo shows the release button. I can't remember if you have to pull the switch to the head light position first, then press the button and pull the shaft out, or if you have to press it when it's in the "off" position. One way will work, but often you have to wiggle the shaft a little.

The release push button is close to the center of the silver of the pic, it has a small spring in it.

Once the knob/ stem is removed, I believe a small pair of needle nose pliers slightly spread open will fit into the notches of the nut. Turning the pliers CCW should screw it out.

Thanks for the reply. I have not removed my switch so I don't know if it is like the one in the picture. I don't really need to remove the whole switch; I only need to remove the knob. I can't figure out how to release the knob from the stem that activates the switch when pulled out.

That's what the spring-loaded button is for I have the arrow pointing to.

Like Doc said, push the button and it should pull out.

The knob and stem/ shaft will pull out.

I thought that maybe you thought the knob would come off of the stem in the way you worded the last reply.
