What is involved in changing the timing belt?

There are two belts on this engine, a timing belt and a balance shaft belt. There are special tools required, mainly to locate and lock the balance shaft in place. Reading the manual it is a bit on the tricky side to do if you have never done this type of job before, considering the special tools involved, i would get your mechanic to quote the job first.

I have a 2001 Honda accord with mileage as noted above. My manual says to replace the timing belt and water pump at about 7 years, or 110K in mileage - so I am there.

The Honda place is looking to charge, after tax and after coupon about $950.99, and my local guy $500 before tax. Can you pls advise me what the average price should be? What do you think im getting for the 950 versus the 550? My local shop is great and I do trust them. Curious what your thoughts are on the steep price differential as well. And, looking to confirm that I should get this done sooner, rather than later.....

It is a norm to have a dealership charge more for their services. And to be truthful it does not always signify better results.

Now I would suggest you dig in deeper to find out exactly what they are going to do. For instance, it is also a good practice to replace the idler pulley that is located under the timing cover. Are they both replacing that? And of course, there is Honda genuine parts versus after market parts. Big difference in price though not always in performance.

For instance, on the timing belt, I trust a couple of the after market manufacturers. Even the water pump isn't too bad when you consider that it will be coming up for replacement again down the road as compared to those items that many never replace until broken or worn out such as struts.

I question the value but I would want to feel comfortable about who is under the hood. Good luck.

I have a Honda Accord 2001 with 62,000 miles on it. I rarely drive long distances. I had my car serviced yesterday for regular maintenance and the dealership told me to consider having the timing belt replaced. They would replace the belt and other belts that needed it. They could do this for a cost of $1200. My question is how urgent is this service? Could a neighborhood garage mechanic do the job? If I can wait on this service, how long until I should have it done?

Back in the '80s Honda recommended the belt be replaced at 75,000 miles, . . . and they commonly broke at around 65,000 miles leading to a REAL expensive engine repair. They use an "interference" engine which means when the timing belt breaks, the open valves are hit by the pistons as they coast to a stop and become bent. You'll need new valves and a since the cylinder head has to come off, you'll get a new head gasket too. Independent mechanics can replace the belt but if proper procedures aren't followed, some valves can still be bent. Anyone with a little experience can handle the job. $1200.00 seems awfully high. They most likely plan on replacing the water pump too if its pulley is one used by the timing belt. The extra cost of the part is cheap insurance against a failure later.

This should take around 3 Hrs, so your price may be a bit high, but this is a very important job as if the belt fails you will be up for a repair bill well into the thousands as it will bend valves. Go get a second quote but don't put this off if it is due to be changed.

Does my car have a timing belt or chain? what kind of sound might i hear if this has broken?

The liter V6 has a belt drive, if it has broken, the engine will not run, there may be no noise heard as when the belt breaks it will case the pistons to hit and bend any open valves, this will happen in a mili second, you wont know it has happened.

I just had my timing belt changed. The car had a stong vibration after the job. The mechanic suggested 2 new engine mounts. Vibration persists. Two additional mounts were put in. Vibratioin persists. He now said its the "balance shaft" but it would have to go to the dealer. The vibration happens mostly at 3K RPM and mostly when accelerating. If the car is cruising on the highway around 1.5K-2K RPM there is no vibration. Please help....

Hi there, Thank you for the donation, This engine has 2 timing belts, one is for the engine balance shaft and if it is not timed correctly you will get this vibration, the balance shaft belt must be removed to take off the engine timing belt, so don't let them tell you that they never touched it.
