Possible crankshaft sensor replacement

A mechanic came and looked at it and said he thinks this is my problem. He wanted to check on the return policy of the sensor just in case this wasn't the problem but never got back. I checked, sensors aren't that expensive but? It isn't running. It will act as if it will turn over and run but doesn't. Since I am new to my location, I do not really feel safe in having just anyone work on it! How do I know if I need a crankshaft sensor replaced?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

The easiest way to check is using a live data scanner. Basically, you watch to see if there is an RPM signal which is shown on the scanner while the engine is being cranked. No RPM signal, my first suspect is the sensor.

Next, fuel can be a problem. Just for the heck of it try this. See if the engine will start if you use starting fluid. If it does, the problem is fuel related. If it doesn't, then it is ignition and again my first suspect is the crankshaft positions sensor.
