Honda CRV 1998 (uk) Clock not illuminated

can anyone tell me how to change the bulb for the digital clock. i have checked all the fuses which are ok. but it looks as if the small clock panel insert should just prise out but i only seem to be mashing it up as i try to do it. surely the whole dash doesent have to come out! nothing at all is mentioned in the manual or my chiltons repair manual?? thank you in advance to anyone with the information

The clock readout is an LED (light emitting diode) array and has no conventional bulb. Mine went out on my 1999 CRV. I think I pried it out by sticking something in the top of it and prising. The circuit board has a single chip on it and some supporting components, along with the readout. The chip had all the correct voltages to work. I guess it just quit.

I haven't done anything with the clock at this time. I popped it back into its opening several months ago when I was checking out the circuitry. I suppose I will eventually buy a new one. Haven't priced them yet. I may also take the thing back out and see if there are any part numbers on the integrated cirucuit "chip" and see if it can be purchased easily. Then I would get out the old magnifying glass, soldering iron with a very small tip, and try to repair it. Don't know when I'll have time for all that though!

I spent some time refamiliarizing myself with getting the clock out. What you do is insert something thin yet unflexible under the center AC vent and pry (prise) down which raises the bottom of the vent up. You may have to move your prising tool left and right to help things along. The vent sort of hinges at the top with the springy retainers at the lower edge. The wires going to the clock and the 4-way flasher switch can now be carfully unplugged. Once you have the vent assembly in your hand, you can undo the phillips-head screws and remove the clock. I priced a clock here. It is around $232 US. Honda sure is proud of it! So I guess I'll get the time some other way............Bob
