Recently my wife took our 2006 Honda Odyssey in for a routine service call. In talking to the service rep, he told her that this was the regularly scheduled time to "Pack the Bearings" and it would cost about $ 250. Fortunately, she thought that sounded a little fishy, so she called to ask and I told her, absolutely not.
Just to confirm, I believe sealed bearings have been put in to cars since about 1978 or so. I grew up on a farm and had to pack many bearings on wagons and tractors pre-dating 1978, so I know what is involved. I have told this story to many people, for whom it has either saved them a lot of money or made them realize that they had been taken.
Is this a scam or does it have any merit for a 2006 Honda Odyssey?
Your Input would be very welcome.
Thanks

The 2006 Odyssey uses sealed wheel bearings. If they fail you must replace the bearing as a whole, you can not replace a specific part of it and there is no need to pack bearing. A further look at your vehicle's maintenance log shows NO bearing grease packing at all. You and your wife were smart on avoiding this dealer.
